Interstellar

Christopher Nolan is not a perfect, but he has -- paraphrasing Virginia Woolf -- a consistency of vision which overwhelms our ability to say no.

I wish I could remember the real quote. It was in an essay in which she was talking about a great painter. After seeing Interstellar, I've come to the conclusion that Christopher Nolan is probably a genius; would have been one of our great painters in the era when painting reigned. This movie is what "Gravity" wanted to be. But it's so much more of an achievement. It could have been lost to total silliness... but he maintained it, somehow. It overcomes its own flaws, and our own cynicism: and overcoming the audience's cynicism in the age of the internet is an extraordinary feat.

The movie is phenomenal and exhausting. It is chilling and confusing and even frustrating at times, especially when it comes to Matthew McConaghey's mumbling delivery, and the score sometimes being louder than the dialogue. A large portion of logic disappears toward the end and then the audience is left to rely on their own suspension of disbelief. But in the end it's a colossal achievement. Probably one of the best movies I've ever seen. Ever.

So after hundreds of absolutely wretched pieces of shit churned out by the Hollywood garbage dispenser, we get this piece of brilliance. And I'm so happy it was released by Paramount and not News Corporation, which is the most vile evil company in America. Every time I watch an X-Men movie, or see that 20th Century Fox logo, I feel sick with guilt.

I actually left this movie feeling happy and oddly, reinvigorated with human spirit.

What can you do about Women? I was looking back at some old entries and I mentioned Jill Clayburg in her "last role." Turns out she had another role, in Bridesmaids, which was released almost two years after her death.

Bridesmaids is an extraordinary movie, but I haven't been able to figure out if it's because women don't mind seeing other women behave like men, or if it's because women behaving badly is truly funny. In this, I think the latter applies. The women in this great movie are truly funny, and not at the expense of men or husbands, as Joan Rivers used to do. The humor of this movie stems from what people (women) are willing to do for those that they care about. In Kristen Wiig's case, it's her best (or former best) friend. So it's kind of a lesbianesque story that doesn't involve lesbianism. Heterosexual romance that mostly involves sharing some carrots. And anonymous sex which involves only that Mad Men hunk with the giant cock.

Attention: web site designer assholes.  You are assholes. Each and every one of you.

Whenever a video "auto plays," I leave that page INSTANTLY.  INSTANTLY INSTANTLY INSTANTLY.  I don't read another word. I click the x on the tab. I know clicks are probably more important than actually content (medium is the message, still). But just in case there are a few people out there who still care about content.... I take back some of the things I said about this movie.

What I don't take back is this: I am really really tired of the Jason what's-her-face always requiring some line in the script about how "nice looking" his dick is.

Also, am sick to death of animal abuse in movies. It does not matter if a person is a meat eater or not... that has absolutely nothing to do with the portrayal of animal torment.
